⛵ Female Sailors are Making History! ⛵

Sail Like A Girl made history last month as they were the first all women’s group to take home the victory for Race to Alaska. The race lasted six days, 13 hours, and 7 minutes out on the open waters starting from Victoria, BC and ending in Ketchikan, Alaska. This journey had crazy twists and turns. With a mixed bag of sailors, these women had an experience of a lifetime! This story holds true to the old saying if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!

Team Sail Like A Girl was a group made out of the desire to start a conversation about the male dominance in sailing. They sailed, and won, in hopes of catalyzing a change in the sailing community and paving a way for women interested in participating in the sport.
We were inspired by this story at Snag-A-Slip, and we want to encourage women to get out there and enjoy the water!
💪 Female Sailing Associations and Events 💪
If you’re a woman that’s interested in the getting into sailing, there are plenty of organizations that can help. The National Women’s Sailing Association is a great resource that helps young girls get into sailing through many different programs, including a Learn to Sail Scholarship. There are also many local women sailing classes and organizations across the country for women of all ages to get involved in the sailing world!
With the help of Mary Ewenson and Molly Winans of local SpinSheet Publishing Company in Annapolis, we have compiled a list of great local organizations to check out if you’re interested in more programs for women in sailing! Mary and Molly are both amazing activists for women in sailing and many members of SpinSheet are female sailors themselves. Check them out here, and make sure to look for their column “Start Sailing Now,” which highlights sailors of all types!

Herrington Harbour Sailing Association (HHSA)
The HHSA hosts an annual Women’s Regatta and it is such a fun and empowering event for women of all sailing levels get to come out and compete!
HHSA also has a group called “Women Underway” which is an all female group of sailors who hold events and get out on the water together. Check them out here and contact womenunderway@hhsa.org for more information!
Cruisers University - Annapolis, Maryland (October 8-11, 2018)
Cruisers University offers sailing classes at Naval Academy during the Annapolis Boat Show called “Cruising Women” that is specifically a class for women taught by women!
Register for the course here, and check out Spinsheet’s Spot on Wendy Woods, who went “from passenger to crew” with Cruisers University Women’s Sailing course.
The Boat Show itself also isn’t a bad place to meet people and make connections – maybe you’ll find your sailing team there like Team Sail Like A Girl did!

The National Sailing Hall of Fame
The National Sailing Hall of Fame hosts The Adams Cup and has inducted many female sailors throughout the years! The Adams Cup is the National Women’s Sailing Championship in the United States. Check it out here!
The cool thing about these organizations, groups, and events is that they’re all local to our Snag adventurers in the Chesapeake Bay! With so many great opportunities to get involved in boating and sailing, women should never miss out!
